MiLab: Virtual Labs, Real Impact on STEM Learning

What is MILAB

MiLab is a game-based virtual science laboratory developed through a collaboration between Mzuzu University, the Ministry of Education, and the UNDP Accelerator Lab. MiLab aims to improve access to science education in Malawi, particularly for students in rural areas with limited laboratory facilities. By allowing students to conduct interactive experiments in subjects like physics and chemistry, MiLab addresses the challenges posed by a lack of equipped laboratories and congestion in schools. This tool not only supplements traditional labs but also enhances the quality of science education across secondary schools.

Success Stories: Transforming Education, One Experiment at a Time

Since its launch in October 2022, MiLab has transformed STEM education across Malawi:

Initially deployed in 19 secondary schools, MiLab is now used in 33 schools, providing students with hands-on virtual lab experiences. Over 50 science teachers have been trained as master trainers, empowering them to introduce MiLab to their colleagues and students.

Through partnerships with Airtel Malawi and UNICEF, MiLab has become a key component of the Connect-A-School Program, equipping schools with state-of-the-art tablets, smart TVs, and desktops. Schools like Chawamba and Ligowe CDSS are benefiting from this integration, ensuring that even remote areas are not left behind in Malawi’s educational digitalization journey.

In March 2023, MiLab was showcased at the 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW67) in New York. Students and educators presented MiLab to global stakeholders, demonstrating its power to level the educational playing field for girls and boys alike, particularly in STEM subjects.

MiLab has also been recognized on the national stage. During the National Open Distance and e-Learning Symposium in June 2023, students and teachers from Dzenza Secondary School demonstrated the app to the Minister of Education, reinforcing MiLab’s role in increasing equitable access to quality education through open and distance learning.

MiLab and the Future of Education in Malawi

MiLab isn’t just solving today’s problems; it’s building a foundation for the future. As Malawi strives toward its MW2063 Vision, MiLab will play a key role in equipping the next generation with the skills they need to succeed in science and technology.

Our vision includes:

Expansion into Other STEM Fields: While MiLab currently focuses on physics and chemistry, we plan to introduce virtual experiments in biology, agriculture, and other crucial STEM subjects.

National Rollout: MiLab aims to be in every secondary school across Malawi, providing students with the same access to high-quality science education, regardless of location.

Building Makerspaces: We’re working on establishing regional Makerspaces to help maintain and assemble the technology needed to support MiLab, ensuring its sustainability.
